George Ruddell Black

George Ruddell Black was the son of John Black of Dromara, Co. Down. He was the director of G. R. Black & Co, clothing manufacturers, situated at James Street South.
Black was elected as alderman for St George’s ward in 1926. He was chairman of the Corporation Improvement Committee in 1930 and 1935-36. Black also served as chairman of the Finance Committee from 1937 to 1942. He was appointed as High Sheriff in 1935.
Black served on the Belfast Water Board and the Harbour Board. He was one of the original members and treasurer of South Belfast Unionist Association.
He died while in post as Lord Mayor on 28 December 1942, after a short illness.
