Robert George Kinahan (known as Robin) was a Unionist politician and businessman who served as Lord Mayor during 1959 and 1960.

The son of Henry Kinahan and Ula Thornton, Robin was born in Belfast on 24 September 1916 and was educated at Stowe School, Buckinghamshire.

After his education he went into the family firm, Lyle & Kinahan wine and spirit merchants, with a Vinters’ Company scholarship.

During the Second World War, Kinahan joined the Royal Artillery 8th Anti-Aircraft Regiment and served in France before a transfer to Myanmar (formerly Burma).

In 1948, Kinahan was elected as a councillor for Oldpark ward and served in the Belfast Corporation for ten years. He was elected as an MP in the Northern Ireland Parliament in 1958 but resigned his seat the following year to take up the post of Lord Mayor.

Kinahan was knighted in 1961. He served as chairman of the Ulster bank from 1970 to 1982, and as director of a number of major companies including Bass Ireland, Gallaher Ltd and Abbey Life.
